The Old Fishing Dock New Orleans Plein Air 9x12

Painted this Plein Air here in New Orleans on a beautiful sunny day this week.  I love painting water.  It's all about what you leave out that makes it pop.  Speaking of pop the bright green floating on the top of the water was really this colorful.

Avocado 5x7

I wanted to try a more detailed simple subject with my new oil-primed linen.   Also remembered to take some photos along the way so I assembled them into a quick video.  Check it out and share on Facebook please!

Enchanted Clearing 8x10

Okay picture this with a little less contrast and a little less crazy yellow.  The photo was not exactly right once again. Did this one for the DPW summer challenge.  Brightly lit scenes like this are hard to do but it really said summer to me.  I love how it came out since I managed to have some restraint and keep things from getting muddy.  I did as much as possible with the early stage drawing and gave it a day to dry before going over with the colorful details.

White Birds Of Paradise 9x12

Some more of my favorite tropical flower the "Giant White Bird of Paradise". The colors are similar to the regular blooms except for the white petals instead of orange and they are almost twice the size.

English Garden Cottage 9x12

The sun was at our backs and barely breaking through on an overcast day.  This created a great mood that I had to try and capture in color.  A beautiful garden that was just coming to life in late spring deep greens with the first of the bold summer colors rising up.

Santa Rosa Afternoon 8x10 Oil On Linen

I have said it before but I really love to paint in California.  Something about the light and the scenery that just keeps me inspired.  Just finished this one from the last trip to Santa Rosa.  This was one of the many amazing rose varieties I had to pick from.  Could not resist pairing the incredible Cobalt Blue vase with an orange.  The large vase in the background is a hand blown mix of blues and greens.  I hope you guys like it. Please leave a comment and pretty please share it with your friends so I can find more art lovers.

Morning Angels 8x10 Oil On Linen

This is my new favorite flower to paint the Angel Wing Begonia. They are named for the amazing leaves in the shape of wings but I love the new bloom varieties.

Moonrise In The French Quarter 8x10 Oil On Linen

Another night scene here in New Orleans.  Always on the lookout for these good spots.  This is behind the big cathedral looking towards the water.

Daylilly With White And Pink Roses 6x8

I would love it if someone bought this one with the previous Lily painting.  They are definitely a great match to be framed and hung together.  Had two amazing trips back to back but happy to be back in the studio painting.  Watch for a new French Quarter night scene to be finished and posted tomorrow.

Tiger Lily With White Peonies 6x8

Took a few days after getting back from California to pack and ship all the sold paintings.  Now I am finally on to un-packing all the unfinished paintings from the trip.  Ended up spending all my time finishing this first one because I really wanted to tackle the challenge of never before painted white peonies.  I love how they came out in the end.  Hard for something so light and fluffy to compete with the big bold petals of a lily but it holds it's own and then some.

Tea Rose California Arrangement 8x10 Oil On Linen

Some objects from the house here in Santa Rosa.  The stacking blue pots with lid was where I started.  I then added an antique clear glass wine bottle in the back right.  The Tea Rose branch is from the garden out back and the apple helped round it all out.  Still having trouble with the photos being away from home.  This one like the others has the contrast too high and the background is a bit washed out also.

Angel Wing Begonias 8x10

Seen these called Angel Wings and Dragon Wings from time to time.  Not sure but I know they are my favorite type of Begonia.  Had this still life planned as my second California painting for this trip and now I will get out and start on some landscapes.  This photo came out pretty accurate except for those dark black shadows on the leaves are much more colorful and varied on the real painting.

Purple Pansies With Yellow Begonias 8x10

Took me a bit longer than expected to get setup and painting here in California but here is the first of many paintings to come.  I will be getting out and doing some landscapes but have been blown away by the number of flowers to paint here.  It is instant summer color with some summer heat as well unfortunately.  I did my best photographing this painting without my usual home setup.  The contrast is too high and as usual the camera drops a lot of the purple/violet colors.  This might be my new favorite floral, hope you like it too leave me a comment or click like please!

California Coast Plein Air 8x10

This was the last of my California series of plein air paintings.  About to embark on my next trip so I thought it was time to post this one that I had been keeping in reserve for myself for a little while.  This spot is stunning and was somewhere north of Bodega Bay.  It was my first time painting on the Pacific coast so I am not sure where I was?

The Soloist, Single Purple Clematis In The Spotlight 9x12 Oil On Linen Panel

This has been the best Clematis plant I have ever owned.  It has survived a hurricane and being crushed by a grill. The blooms are the largest I have ever seen on any variety as well.  The best part is I got it off the half dead sale rack at Lowes for $3.00!  Paired it with some of the leaves from my daylily which is just about to bloom as well.  Let me know what you think, it's great to get Comments, Likes, and Shares.

Garden Picked Arrangement 5x7

Picked the whole arrangement from my little garden.  Hopefully more new blooms later on in the season.  These pink snapdragons have been indestructible and stayed green all winter!  The photo is not 100% accurate.  The contrast on the shadows is a lot less sharp, and the pinks are much more vivid.  Like always it will look better in person and I have a return policy so go ahead and get it you will love it!

Single Lily With Coreopsis 5x7

My wonderful husband surprised me with a big bouquet of flowers the other day.  There were about 5 of these wonderful huge lilies in the bunch but they almost all had wilted before I had time to paint them.  This was the last one to bloom so I stopped procrastinating and added him to some yellow Coreopsis from our garden.  The thick glass of the contemporary bud vase was a fun challenge to paint.  Hope you like it, let me know what you think.

Sunset For The Windmill 9x12

These great old California farm buildings are still barely standing on the road to Brandon's parents house. I have tried capturing them before in bright winter daylight but it lacked the extra patina of age when washed out by the sun.  Ended up wiping that one and I am glad I did.  This second try really got the silent mood of the place.  You walk through there and just know it is from another time.  When things were done on a smaller scale.  When you needed a little windmill like this one to pump a well for just that field.  I wondered how many years that windmill had been spinning and just what stopped it for the last time.  Was it the vines that no one came to cut down anymore?  Now they help it to look like a falling flower, leaving a few petals behind.
The composition was lined up to catch those far off palm trees in the distance.  Did another California painting this week because I am excited to announce I get to return for two weeks of painting in May!  So look for more plein air landscapes.
